Choosing when to go to Disney is one of the biggest decisions you make regarding your family’s vacation. Late summer and fall are great times to visit, but they do come with some extra considerations. Here are the pros and cons of taking a Disney vacation during hurricane season.
What You Need to Know About Hurricane Season
Let’s focus on two of the most popular Disney Destinations: Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st – November 30th. It generally peaks between mid-August to mid-October.
Walt Disney World Resort is located just outside of Orlando, which is 42 miles inland from the Atlantic and 77 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The area can experience strong hurricanes, but storms generally weaken before arriving due to the distance from the shore.
Disney Cruise Line sails out of Port Canaveral, Port Miami, and the Port of Galveston in the Southern US. It also sails out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Itineraries in these areas travel the Bahamas and the Caribbean and are very susceptible to hurricanes when they occur.
Cons of Traveling During Hurricane Season
I’m going to get the cons out of the way because they’re fairly obvious.
Changing Plans
When you travel to hurricane-affected areas during hurricane season, you do take the risk of having to change your vacation plans. Flights can get canceled, roads can be closed, and in some cases the theme parks will close to ensure guest safety. Cruise lines are more likely to be affected and may alter their itineraries to accommodate the weather. Be prepared to be flexible with your plans if needed.
Weather
The average rainfall in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean peaks between June and September. When you add a hurricane to the mix, you can expect extra rainfall to hit the surrounding areas. Rain can affect your daily plans so be sure to keep an eye on the forecasts.
Pros of Traveling During Hurricane Season
Traveling during hurricane season isn’t all bad. In fact, there are a few great perks!
Lower Prices
During the early Fall, both Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line offer some of their lowest prices of the year. This is a great way to stretch your budget and save hundreds on your trip.
Lower Crowds
We all know the magic question regarding Disney World is when you can visit with fewer crowds. In general, the early Fall has less crowds and that means less time in lines.
Fall/Halloweentime Events
I always love Disney’s seasonal events, and Halloweentime is a great time. At the parks you’ll find festive decorations, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and seasonal treats (think lots of pumpkin). This is also the time frame for one of Disney’s most popular events: the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.
During September and October Disney Cruise Line offers Halloween on the High Seas sailings. These include specially themed events and experiences onboard the ships, including activities for both adults and kids.
How to Plan Ahead for Late Summer and Fall Travel
If you decide that the Fall is the best time for your family to take a Disney vacation, here are some items you’ll want to consider to make the most of your trip.
Travel Insurance
If you’re traveling during hurricane season, travel insurance is a must. It will protect your vacation investment if plans change and take the stress out of non-refundable deposits.
Stay Informed
Watch the weather forecasts as you approach your trip to determine if there are any issues arising. The National Weather Service monitors storms and will make predictions as to which areas may be affected.
Work with a Travel Agent
Travel agents are a great resource to have in your corner. Not only are we there to help you plan an amazing vacation, but we’re also there to take the stress off of you when things go wrong.
We monitor these types of situations and can explain all of the options to you so you can make informed decisions. During Hurricane Irma I spent full days on the phone for my clients to get their questions answered and adjust their plans.
