We’re ready for some summer fun, so I thought I’d get ahead of the game and share some of my best tips for making the most of a summer vacation at the Disney Parks!
Before we get started, I do want to answer this frequently asked question:
Q. Is it hot in [Florida/California] in [June/July/August]?
A. Yes
(I honestly do get this question all the time, so I wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page)
Now onto the good stuff!
Plan Ahead
If I could only give you one tip for your trip, it would be this: plan ahead. The last thing you want to do in the heat of summer is show up mid-morning without any plans in place and wait outside in line for hours. When you plan ahead you’ll know the best time to experience the attractions and where to go when you want to get out of the sun. Thankfully, you don’t have to do the planning yourself! Find out how you can have a “mouse expert” plan your vacation for free.
Know What’s on Everyone’s “Must Do” List
When you’re working out plans, be sure to source the crowd (i.e. your family) and figure out what everyone really wants to do on the trip. Some people may have thrill rides at the top of their list, and others may be content meeting the characters and catching a show. When you narrow down to everyone’s top “must do’s”, you can plan a visit that the whole family can enjoy.
Take Advantage of Summer Flexibility
You’ll hear a lot about the “best” time to visit the parks, but don’t feel like you’re missing out if your schedule requires you to visit in the summer. Crowds are more dispersed throughout the season (excepting the week of 4th of July). There are also a lot of great deals! I highly recommend working with a vacation planner who can help you find the best week to go at the best price (and you know I’d love to help you with that).
Prepare Yourself for the Summer Sun
Pack smart when it comes to summer. Here are a few things you’ll want to include in your park bag: sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, ponchos (summer showers are popular in Florida), and cooling towels. If you’re bringing a little one, you’ll also want a stroller fan and baby-safe sunscreen.
Get Up Early/Stay Out Late
Okay, I know how this sounds. But one of the “tricks” to enjoying the parks during the heat of summer is to avoid the mid-day peaks. Aim to get to the parks first thing in the morning, take a mid-day break, and then head back to the parks in the late afternoon/evening. Great break ideas include a table-service meal (indoors of course), some pool time, or a relaxing nap back in your air conditioned room.
Hit the Water Parks
Did you know that Walt Disney World Resort offers two amazing water parks? Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon are located on-site and offer fun thrills for the whole family. You can visit these with a Park Hopper Plus ticket, which is a great way to stretch your vacation. The water parks are accessible by bus from the Disney Resort hotels.
Plan a Break Day
I love to suggest a break day in the middle of a Disney vacation, and this is especially true if you’re visiting during the heat of summer. The parks are certainly fun, but you will be doing a lot of walking outside. Spend one of your vacation days sleeping in, enjoying your resort, and cooling off by the pool. It’s nice to have a day of flexible fun so you can be free to explore.
Look for Special Events
The Disney Parks are exciting on their own, but they’re even more fun during special events! There’s usually something happening during the summers, such as the Incredible Summer over at Walt Disney World Resort and Pixar Fest over at Disneyland Resort. These events bring concerts, special fireworks shows, themed treats, and unique character experiences to the parks.
Cool Off on the Water Rides
If it’s getting really hot, consider cooling off on one of Disney’s thrilling water rides. Fan-favorites include Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom, and Grizzly River Rapids in California Adventure. Little ones will enjoy the splash pads at Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disneyland, and California Adventure.
Find Yourself a Refreshing Treat
Finally, you’re on vacation and you’re going to want to indulge. What’s better in the summer than ice cream? Or perhaps some frozen drinks? Whichever you choose, the Disney Parks offer some incredible dining and dessert options. My personal favorite? I’d have to go with a Dole Whip of course!
