There’s nothing like a Disney Cruise. It’s truly a vacation for the whole family, whether you’re looking to explore tropical islands, make a splash on a water coaster, or relax in the sun. But everyone is looking for the best deal and vacations can be an investment. Here are 15 easy ways to save money on a Disney Cruise.
1) Book Early
As the ships fill up, the rates increase. In fact, the cheapest day to book is typically the day the cruise is released. If you’re looking for specific rooms, such as those than sleep 5 or connecting rooms, booking early is a must. Plus, as time goes by only the more expensive staterooms remain (although there is a lot of value in those too).
2) Be Flexible
Cruises are more expensive during holidays and when the kids are out of school (summer vacation, spring break, etc). If you can shift your cruise by a week or two, you might find that it is substantially cheaper. This is especially true during Christmastime.
3) Look for Promotions
While not as frequent as for its theme park counterparts, Disney Cruise Line does offer periodic promotions and discounts. If you are a member of the U.S. Military or a Florida Resident, check for available discounts on select cruises.
4) Book an Inside Stateroom
One of the best ways to save money on your cruise is to book an Inside Stateroom instead of an Oceanview Stateroom or a Verandah room. If you’re not planning on spending much time in your room, this may be a great option for you. Inside Staterooms on the Disney Fantasy and the Disney Dream even have “Magical Portholes” that give you a digital glimpse of the seas outside!
5) Book Two Instead of One
If you’re traveling with a family of 5, booking two Inside Staterooms is often cheaper than booking one Verandah room.
6) Book a Guaranteed Stateroom
Guaranteed staterooms are released close to sailings and allow you to choose a general category, such as an Inside Stateroom or Oceanview Stateroom, but not the specific room. It is a guarantee that you will get that category of stateroom or higher, so there’s a chance you could get an upgrade.
7) Look for “Secret” Staterooms
Secret Porthole Rooms are those that have obstructed views and are priced as a lower category (e.g. an Inside Stateroom that actually has an obstructed porthole). There are only a few on each ship, so be prepared to book early if you’d like to take advantage of these.
8) Upgrade at the Port
If you arrive at the port early enough, you will sometimes find you are able to ask for an upgrade when you check in. You’ll still need to pay the difference, but often the upgrade price will be significantly lower than if you had done it in advance. There are no guarantees here, but it never hurts to ask!
9) Compare Rates for Port Transfers
Disney offers a motorcoach to take you from Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral for cruises leaving from Florida. However, it may be cheaper to use private transportation depending on the size of your family. Price out all your options to get the best deal.
10) Choose Your Parking Wisely
If you’ll be driving to the port and parking, compare your options. You may find that a Park & Cruise package from a local hotel will be cheaper than parking at the port itself for a week.
11) Bring Your Own Beer/Wine
Disney Cruise Line allows you to bring onboard two bottles of unopened wine or six beers per person. These can be consumed in your stateroom or in a restaurant (corkage fees apply).
12) Get Fountain Drinks at the Fountains
Soft drinks are included with all meals and at the Beverage Stations on each ship. They’re also available in the teen lounges. However, there is an extra charge at any of the bars or lounges (don’t pay for a soda if you don’t have to).
13) Set Up Your Cell Phone for Travel
Visit the Connect@Sea desk onboard the ship to have your phone set up correctly for international travel. This will save you from unwanted data charges and roaming. Also, skip the Internet package if you can – you’re on vacation after all.
14) Book Your Next Cruise Before You Leave the Ship
Get the benefit of a 10% refundable deposit and great discounts when you book your next Disney Cruise onboard. And if you’re already working with a travel agent, they can continue to help you with your next incredible vacation.
15) Use a Travel Agent (Who Specializes in Disney Cruises)
